A new report that ranks states based on climate-related risks and the way they affect human health has some not-so-good news for Arizona. Data from the Commonwealth Fund places Arizona in 45th place in the country. The organization has been evaluating the performance of the state's health system for a while, but recently began analyzing a new set of indicators to determine how the health of the state's population was affected by the environment and by specific weather-related events and disasters. Massachusetts, for example, ranks last in several measures of care for adults 65 and older, including avoidable hospitalizations and hospital readmissions.
States were evaluated and ranked based on the performance of their health systems for each of the four groups separately (based on data availability), and then those scores were combined to obtain the state's final overall composite score. Arizona scored well in some areas, including emissions produced by health workers and the risk that natural disasters pose to health care facilities.
